Congress appreciates Dixit's assurance to protect women in New Delhi
Imphal, Jan 10 (UNI) The women's wing of the Manipur unit of the Congress has welcomed Delhi Chief Minister Shiela Dixit's assurance to protect the women from the Northeastern region in the national capital.
Recently, reports of crimes against women from the region had been increasing and the Delhi Police had allegedly refused to take up appropriate action in the matter.
However, Ms Dixit assured Manipur Congress president Gaikhangam yesterday that women from the NE states would be provided adequate security.
Mr Gaikhangam had held a meeting with the Chief Minister yesterday, in which he expressed concern over the increasing crimes against women in the capital.
He also expressed unhappiness over the Delhi Police's alleged refusal to take action against the perpetrators.
Meanwhile, Ms Dixit discussed the matter with the Delhi Police Commissioner and instructed him to take prompt action and ensure that such crimes were not repeated.
Ms Dixit stated that the matter would also be discussed with Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil and informed that a hostel, exclusively for the women from the region, would also be constructed.
