Cement makers adopt districts for subsidised cement
Chennai, Jan 9 (UNI) Cement manufacturers in Tamil Nadu today said they will adopt certain districts near their units to provide cement at a subsidised rate of Rs 200 per bag to economically backward and lower middle class people.
In a letter to Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, signed by seven cement producers, they said though the market price of cement was always determined by demand-supply factors and other free market forces, in deference to the wishes of the Chief Minister, they would offer 20 lakh bags of blended cement every month in all districts of Tamil Nadu at a subsidised rate of Rs 200 per bag.
In the letter, a copy of which was released to the press here, they said cement would be delivered at the doorstep of consumers against permits to be issued by appropriate officials in every district.
''Producers located outside Tamil Nadu supplying cement to the state will also participate in the scheme,'' the companies said and underscored their commitment to supply 14 lakh bags a month to Tamil Nadu Cement Corporation (TANCEM) at a concessional price of Rs 220 per bag from the current Rs 230 per bag.
