SC ask TN and AP to amicably resolve Palar river water dispute
New Delhi, Jan 7 (UNI) The Supreme Court today requested the state governments of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh to amicably resolve the Palar river water dispute instead of asking this court to decide the issue on merits.
A bench comprising Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan and Justices R V Raveendran and J M Panchal granted two months time to the governments to enter into a dialogue and resolve the issue.
Tamil Nadu had filed a suit in the Supreme Court seeking directions to Andhra Pradesh not to go ahead with the construction of Palar Check Dam to obstruct the flow of the water of the river to Tamil Nadu and thereby denying the state its share of water in the river.
Tamil Nadu government also prayed to the apex court to direct Andhra Pradesh to maintain status quo till the final disposal of the suit.
The apex court had, however, suggested the two governments time and again to put their heads together and resolve the dispute through mutual dialogue instead of locking horns in the courts.
