Governor terms Visva-Bharati incident as "human tragedy"

Santiniketan, Jan 7 (UNI) West Bengal Governor Gopal Krisna Gandhi today described as a ''human tragedy'' the killing of a Visva-Bharati music student.

Mr Gandhi, also Rector of the university, visited the campus this morning after yesterday's shocking incident in which Swaswati Pal, a third year Bachelor of Music student, was gunned down by a youth, who later also shot himself dead.

The Governor directed the District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police to submit a report at the earliest on how the security of the university could be beefed up.

He said, '' The incident not only smacks of breach of security, but something more than that. It is a human tragedy. Guns do not go with Santiniketan, which is an abode of peace. '' The students submitted a charter of demands, including tightening of security in the campus, to the Governor .

Mr Gandhi also paid floral tributes to the deceased student.
