''It may be significant to note that SEZs were practically a non-starter during the NDA regime and consequently there was steep dip in the employment potential,'' AICC spokesman Abhishek Singhvi told reporters. The employment graph had now picked up and ''we may have to keep up the tempo by focusing on creation of employment in industry and also in agriculture. Each state may have its own local issues and it is for the respective states to evolve its own policy on SEZs in the context of the national policy,'' he said.
It was at the instance of Congress President Sonia Gandhi, a GoM was formed to examine the issue relating to SEZ. After deliberations with all political parties and stakeholders, the policy for resettlement and rehabilitation, the government policy of acquiring land for SEZs and payment of compensation were thoroughly revised a new policy was formulated, he said.
