Suspended Orissa DGP Mohanty to surrender within two weeks
New Delhi, Jan 3 (UNI) Suspended Orissa DGP (Home Guards) B B Mohanty today assured the Supreme Court that he will surrender before the trial court in Rajasthan within two weeks and sought directions to the trial court to consider and dispose of his bail application immediately.
Mohanty is facing allegation of helping his son, Bitti Mohanty, convicted and sentenced for raping a German tourist, in jumping the bail.
A bench comprising Justices C K Thakker and D K Jain, however, declined to issue any such directions to the trial court and told the petitioner to surrender before the court at the earliest and apply for regular bail.
The counsel for B B Mohanty assured the apex court that the DGP would surrender before the trial court within two weeks.
Mohanty is wanted by the Rajasthan police as he stood surety when bail was granted to his son, who failed to surrender after his parole was over.
Bitty Mohanty was sentenced to seven-year imprisonment by a Fast-track court in Rajasthan for repeatedly raping the tourist for about two weeks.
The DGP had moved the apex court against the order of the High Court which had directed him to turn in before the Rajasthan police.
However, the Rajasthan police had been complaining that the Orissa government was not cooperating and trying to shield its senior police officer.
