Jharkhand announces Rs 10 lakh compensation

Rourkela, Jan 2 (UNI) The Jharkhand government today announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the next of the kin of the jawan killed in an attack by the Maoists at Bansjhar police outpost area under Simdega district on the Orissa-Jharkhand border.

Jharkhand Director General of Police Bishnu Dayal Ram said in addition to the compensation, the family of the deceased would also continue to get his salary till the completion of his service period.

He said all the six Jharkhand Armed Police personnel would get a cash award of Rs 10,000 and a promotion for fighting the Maoists bravely.

About 150 extremists attacked the outpost shortly after midnight last night. The police retaliated and the exchange of fire continued for about four hours in which one security personnel of the Jharkhand Armed Police was killed and seven others, including a civilian, were injured.

Police identified the deceased as Sunil Sahaya and the injured as Amarnath Paswan, N Munda, Md Abraham, Delvis Kerketta, Maheswar Mahanto, S Paul Kerketta (All from Jharkhand Armed Police) and civilian Umesh Yadav.

The injured had been admitted to the Ispat General Hospital at Rourkela, police added.
