Centre mulls schemes to revamp Postal Dept

Chennai, Jan 2 (UNI) Union Minister for Communications and Information Technology A Raja today said the Centre was planning to introduce various new schemes to reduce the loss incurred by the Postal Department.

Talking to newspersons on the sidelines of the inauguration of the 'India National Philatelic Exhibition - Inpex 2008', he said the department would launch more such beneficial schemes to stay competitive and record higher growth rates like the departments of Information Technology and Telecom.

Stressing the need for transforming the postal services to meet future challenges and prepare them to compete in the new environment of globalisation, Mr Raja said the need of the hour was that the official concerned should learn and develop strategies to transform the postal services to the changed situation.

Mr Raja said the Centre had planned to introduced a new Bill in the next Parliament session to streamline the courier industry in the country.

''A new Bill will be introduced in the next Parliament session in order to streamline the courier services in India, which is still unorganised'', he said adding ''this will help the postal department to earn more revenue''.
