New Year celebrated in Puducherry

Puducherry, Jan 1: Pomp and gaiety marked the New Year celebrations in the Union Territory of Puducherry today.

Midnight mass were conducted in all churches and early morning special poojas were performed in temples. Long queues were seen in front of the famous Manakkula Vinayagar temple and the Prathiyangari Kaali temple here.

A large number of youth, who thronged the beach here to celebrate New Year, danced and exchanged pleasantaries.

With more than 50,000 tourists coming to celebrate the New Year in Puducherry, several foreigners were seen on the streets here celebrating the dawn of the New Year. Police made elaborate security arrangements to ensure peaceful conduct of celebrations.

Lt Governor Mukut Mithi, Chief Minister N Rangasamy and several political party leaders greeted the people on the occasion.
