Cong wrests Mayor's post from BJP-Akali Dal

Chandigarh, Jan 1 (UNI) The Congress has wrested the post of Mayor of Chandigarh from the BJP-Akali Dal combine in the elections here today.

Pradeep Chhabra of the Congress defeated his nearest rival Gurcharan Dass Kala of the BJP by a margin of 10 votes in the 35-member corporation. Mr Chhabra polled 20 votes as against Mr Kala's 10 votes. Jatinder Bhatia of the BSP could procure only five votes.

The posts of the Senior Deputy Mayor and the Deputy Mayor were also captured by Congress candidates Anju Beniwal and Harphool Chand Kalyan respectively.

In the 35-member corporation, there are 26 elected members and nine nominated members. The Congress has 15 elected members, BJP-Akali Dal combine eight members and the BSP three mebers.
