Accused convicted in idols theft case

Kochi, Jan 1 (UNI) The Chief Judicial Magistrate convicted Abraham Thomas for the offences punishable under section-14 of Antiquities and Art Treasures Act, 1972.

In a judgement delivered here yesterday, the judge slapped a fine of Rs 25,000 and in default to undergo a simple imprisonment of 45 days.

The accused Abraham Thomas was found in possession two Panchaloha Idols of Ardhanariswara and Ganesha and attempted to sell the idols as antiques without obtaining the necessary license.

On examination of the idols by the experts it was revealed that Ardhanariswara idol is an antique. The above acts proved that the accused committed offence punishable.

The case was investigated and prosecuted by CBI, Cochin Branch.
