Tripura postpones publication of final electoral rolls

Agartala, Dec 30: Tripura Election Department will now check the credentials of fresh voters following detection of large number of fake voters in the state recently.

Official sources said here today the department have also announced to defer the final publication of photo electoral rolls.

Tripura Chief Electoral Officer G S G Ayyanger said the final rolls, supposed to be published on January 2 next had been shifted to January 10.

''After about 1194 fake voters were identified, we have decided to check the credentials of 3600 fresh voters,'' Dr Ayyanger said adding 80 FIRs have been lodged against several voters for using forged certificates.

A team of Election Commission led by Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalaswami would be arriving here on second week of January.

The commission would review the poll preparation and hold meetings with state administrative officials, state poll panel and representatives of different political parties while as per the decision of the state government the election would be held in third week of February, Dr Ayyanger added.
