Hamirpur, Dec 30 (UNI) Congress legislator from Nadaunta constituency Vidya Zar has blamed former Congress Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh for her defeat in the assembly elections, saying had he acted tough against the rebel party candidate the situation would have been different.

Talking to reporters here, she said during his public meeting at Mehere in the constituency Mr Singh had advised her and the rebel party candidate Arvinder Kaur to unite in the interests of the party instead of acting tough against her.

The Congress's Ms Zar lost the state assembly elections by 15,564 votes, while the rebel party candidate polled 5,629 votes and the BSP's Yashpal Singh 5,066.

Ms Zar, quoting the former Chief Minister, said he had termed both of them ''his daughters'' and this had adversely affected her prospects at the hustings, besides affecting the morale of the party activists.

''I was receiving overwhelming response from the public during the elections until Mr Singh's statement, which was exploited by by the BJP's Baldev Sharma to his advantage,'' she claimed.

She said the Naduanta Block Congress would meet on January 5 to find the other causes of the defeat of the party candidate.

Ms Zar had also lost the 2003 assembly elections to Mr Sharma after a rebel candidate in Manjit Dogra contested elections from the segment.
