Chennai, Dec 30 (UNI) The Hindu Munnani warned Tamil Nadu Government against opening of temples under its control on the night of December 31 and January one to mark the New Year celebrations.

In a statement the Hindu Munnani State Organiser N Muruganandam said yesterday opening of the temples at midnight was against the Hindu religion and went against Agama rules.

He said 'pooja' timings are prescribed for all temples and it is a sin to keep temples open at midnight. The Hindus also strongly believe that the day begins only after sunrise, he said.

If the government allowed opening of temples at midnight, Munnani volunteers would organise a state-wide agitation, he warned.

Referring to bursting of crackers to welcome the New Year, the Munnani leader asked what action the police proposed to take against those who burst crackers when it had banned bursting of crackers after 2200 hrs during Deepavali festival.
