Young couple try to commit suicide under police escort

Moga, Dec 29 (UNI) Two young lovers, who had eloped and were being brought back home under police escort, allegedly tried to commit suicide yesterday, police today said.

They have been hospitalised and were said to be in a ''critical condition'', SSP L K Yadav said here today adding that that he had deputed DSP Paramjit Singh to conduct a thorough probe into the matter.

''If any malafide intention was proved against the cops, strict action could be taken against them, '' the SSP said.

The police team, led by ASI Ram Sarup, was bringing the eloped couple back to Faridkot, along with the parents of the boy, when the duo allegedly consumed some poisonous substance.

They were admitted in a private hospital at Muktsar yesterday.

According to police their condition was still critical.

The couple, which wanted to get married against their parents' wishes, had eloped a few months agao and was living in Shekhu village of Muktsar district.

On information, the police party, with the help of the family of the boy, had raided the village last morning and had taken their custody, the SSP said.
