Youth dies in police lock up; SHO suspended

Lucknow, Dec 25 (UNI) A 20-year-old man today died in a police lock up here following alleged torture.

The police said Anees of Malihabad here was taken into custody following a fight between two people on December 23. However, instead of producing him before a Magistrate, the police kept him in the lock up for two days.

This morning when the victim's mother, Heera, came to meet him, she found him dead. The police later rushed him to the Trauma Centre where doctors declared him brought dead.

The victim's mother alleged that his son was beaten up by the police and had died in the lock up itself. But the police claimed that the youth died at the hospital and denied any physical torture.

While SHO of Malihabad police station P P Singh had been kept under suspension, SSP (Lucknow) Akhil Kumar was contemplating to set up a panel of two senior doctors to carry out the post-mortem of Anees' body.
