Relief measures for rain victims gearing up in TN

Chennai, Dec 24 (UNI) Measures to provide relief to the rain-hit areas of Nagapatinam, Salem and Thiruvanamalai districts of Tamil Nadu were being carried out on a warfooting.

Talking to newspersons at Nagapatinam today, Local Administration Minister M K Stalin said after inspecting the rain-affected places in the district, as per the instructions of Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, he had provided relief assistance of Rs 29.80 has been provided to the people, who were affected in torrential downpour.

Mr Stalin also presented dhotis, sarees, rice and kerosene as a welfare measure.

The minister said the Government has also provided Rs one lakh each from the relief fund to the families of four deceased persons in the district. The Government was also taking steps to restore normalcy, he added.

In Salem, Agriculture Minister Veerapandi Arumugam presented relief assistance worth Rs 19 lakh to 554 affected families in torrential rains in the district, according to a release from the Secretariat here.

In Thiruvannamalai, Food Minister A V Velu provided relief materials to the affected people in the district.

Mr Velu assured that necessary facilities would be provided to the affected people in the district. An overbridge would be constructed in the district to facilitate the process after getting the clearance from Mr Karunanidhi, he added.

The minister also assured the farmers that adequate relief-assistance would also be provided to the farmers, who were affected due to damage of 25,000 crops in the district.
