Jammu, Dec 24 (UNI) Jammu and Kashmir Governor Lt General (retd) S K Sinha and Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad today greeted people on the eve of Christmas.

The life and teachings of Jesus Christ show the way for realisation of the ultimate truth and establish an enlightened social order, based on the values of universal love, compassion and righteousness, the Governor said in his message.

Lt Gen Sinha said the hallmark of all religions is to shun violence and the best way to celebrate festivals like Christmas is to strive to build a harmonious society and work for to strengthen the bonds of amity.

Mr Azad hoped the auspicious occasion would herald peace and prosperity in the state.

''Jesus Christ, whose birthday is celebrated as Christmas around the world, was an apostle of peace, who preached love, brotherhood and affection and cared for the poor, downtrodden and needy people,'' he said.

The teachings of Jesus are more relevant in present day global scenario, where materialism and selfishness are overtaking human values, he said.

He prayed for the peace and prosperity of the state and hoped that this year's Chistmas would usher in a new phase of progress and development in Jammu and Kashmir.
