Battery operated three-wheelers for Amritsar city: Minister

Chandigarh, Dec 24 (UNI) The Punjab government proposes to introduce battery (electric) operated three wheelers in Amritsar City, particularly in the area surrounding the Golden Temple to make it pollution-free.

This was stated in the state assembly here today by Science, Technology, Enviornment and Non-Conventional Energy Sources Minister Bikram Singh Majithia during question hour while replying to a query by Ajit Singh Shant (Cong).

Mr Majithia said that Punjab Energy Development Agency (PEDA), a state nodel agency for promotion and development for energy conservation was promoting the use of elecrtic vehicles in Punjab which are pollution-free, environment-friendly. The Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy was providing subsidy upto 33 per cent of the total cost of selected vehicles, such as four-seated battery cars, eight-seated three wheelers and ten-seated mini vans, he added.

Recently PEDA had facilitated the introduction of six electric cars in Mohali, he said. The police in the districts have been requested to adopt battery-operated vehicles for community policing, he told the House.
