Ganga Expressway 'disastrous' for UP: V P Singh

Varanasi, Dec 23 (UNI) Jan Morcha supremo and former Prime Minister Vishswanath Pratap Singh today said the the proposed 1,000 km Greater Noida-Ballia Ganga Expressway project would prove to be 'disastrous' for Uttar Pradesh.

''With construction of the Expressway, several planned and unplanned cities would come in existence on the banks of Ganga river.

Their affluents would submerge in Ganga and further aggravate the Ganga pollution problem,'' Mr Singh maintained, while talking to mediapersons here.

''Fertile lands of the farmers on both banks of the river Ganga would be aquisited for the project...the felling of several lakhs of trees is also must, which would harm the environment,'' the former Kisan Manch chief added.

He observed that when all opposition parties in UP were against this project, they ought to come on one platform by forgetting all minor differences and wage a united struggle to save farmers from misery.
