Suburban villages submerged
Chennai, Dec 21 (UNI) Many villages in the city suburbs were marooned following heavy rains that battered the city since the last three days.
Several villages around Kunrathur, a southern Chennai suburb, were marooned following the release of excess water from Chembarambakkam lake, which was overflowing.
Several huts on the banks of Adyar river were also submerged. The heavy floods in the river also submerged several huts in the area.
The heavy spell of rain has filled up lakes, reservoirs and tanks in the city and other parts of the state.
Chembarambakkam, Poondi, Puzhal and Sholavaram lakes, which provide drinking water to the city, were receiving heavy inflows and getting filled to the maximum capacity. From Poondi lake, 6645 cuses of water was released.
Road traffic to Andhra Pradesh was also badly hit, following a bridge collapse.
Normal life was disrupted in several villages including Sirugalathur, Thiruneermalai, Vazhuthamedu, Somangalam and Amarampedu.
