3 people die in elephant stampede in southeastern Bangladesh

Dhaka , Dec 20 (UNI) Three members of a family died in a stampede by rogue elephants in a village at the foothold of Karaldanga hill in Boalkhali subdistrict in southeastern Chittagong, about 340 km from here, early today.

Police and locals said the flock of 7-8 elephants came down from the Karaldanga hill at about 2 am (local time) and trampled to death Abdul Motaleb (60), a day labour, his wife Jarina Begum (50) and daughter Nurjahan Begum (27). Nurjahan's son Saidul (2) suffered serious injuries and was admitted to Chittagong Medical College hospital. The victims died in sleep, they added.

Local people said the mad elephants also razed several kuthcha houses and went back to the hill.
