Cold wave continues, toll climbs to 36

Lucknow, Dec 17 (UNI) Even as Uttar Pradesh is witnessing bright and sunny mornings, the chill in the air continued to prevail.

At least three more persons died in the last 24 hrs in UP taking the toll to 36 so far.

Several long distance trains were running late due to dense fog.

Besides, the road traffic was affected.

According to met department, a dip was recorded in the night temperature at Lucknow, Agra, Varanasi, Faizabad, Bareilly and Jhansi divisions.

The minimum temperature in Sultanpur stood at 4.9 degree Celsius, Lucknow at 5.4, Kanpur at 5.2, Jhansi at 6.8 and Allahabad was 7.1.

Varanasi, Bareilly and Bahraich recorded 6.1 degrees, 7.4 and 7.7 degrees respectively, while Gorakhpur recorded minimum temperature at 7.9 degrees.

In Mahoba, two persons died in the last 24 hrs due to cold, while another succumbed in Siddharthnagar.

The Met Office has forecast dry weather. The night temperature would dip further and the early mornings and late nights would be characterised by fog.

Owing to sharp decline in night temperature since last few days, the district administration has made arrangements for bonfires at several places in the state capital.
