Punjab: Mann arrested for defying prohibitory orders

Sangrur, Dec 14: Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) president and former MP Simranjit Singh Mann was arrested along with his supporters by the Punjab police for defying prohibitory orders imposed under Section 144 of the CrPC, here today.

According to police sources, Mr Mann was arrested near the local bus stand. He was here to take part in the 'Fateh Divas' (Victory Day). The SAD (Amritsar) had given a call to observe today as Fateh Divas throughout the state, following the installation of portrait of slain Damdami Taksal chief Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale at the Sikh History museum in the Golden Temple Complex by the SGPC.

Fiftyone SAD (Amritsar) activists were arrested after the party gave a call for the Fateh Divas.

The Shiv Sena (Hindustan) will hold protest rallies in the state to express their resentment against the installation of the portrait. Several of its members were arrested by the police in the last two to three days in the state.
