Colourful procession for Kannada meet

Udupi, Karnataka, Dec 12 (UNI) A colourful procession was taken out here today as a part of the four-day 74th Akhila Bharatha Kannada Sahitya Sammelan before the inaugural session.

Sammelan President L S Sheshagiri Rao and Sri Kshetra Dharmastala Dharmadhikari D Veerendra Heggade were taken in a decorated jeep followed by other dignitories.

It was preceded by a decorated chariot of Goddess Bhuvaneshwari pulled by Prof Rao, Dr Heggade and others in the procession.

Over 20 tabuleux depicting scenes from epics and folklore lent added colour to the procession.

As many as 500 women carrying ''kalasas'' and 200 girl students marching by holding Kannada flag also formed part of the procession.

Over 10,000 people participated in the procession.

As the procession reached the venue of the conference, a group of activists from Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (KRV) shouted slogans demanding classical status to Kannada and implementation of Mahajan Commission Recommendations among others.
