World losing patience with Myanmar junta: UN Sec Gen

Bangkok, Dec 10 (UNI) UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon today said the world was losing patience with Myanmar's government which needs to act quickly to promote a democracy-based national political reconciliation.

Addressing a press conference after talks with Thai Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont this afternoon, the UN chief said a return to the status quo prior to the September military crackdown in Myanmar was unacceptable and ''politically unsustainable''.

The UN Secretary General is here at the invitation of the Thai government on the occasion of the King's 80th birthday celebrations.

Mr Ban also urged the Southeast Asian nations' forum ASEAN to persuade Myanmar to promote democratic reconciliation and respect human rights.
