Gandhinagar, Dec 7 (UNI) The Gujarat Government has asked Supreme Court lawyer Ranjit Kumar to represent and defend it in the apex court on a petition against Chief Minister Narendra Modi.

However, a Gujarat Government official today clarified that Mr Kumar has not been appointed as the new counsel for the Gujarat Governemnt because K T S Tulsi has not resigned as the Government counsel.

Mr Tulsi had threatened to quit as government counsel after Mr Modi's controversial speech, justifying the Sohrabuddin fake encounter killing. Mr Tulsi had said it would be difficult for him to continue defending the government.

Meanwhile, Mr Modi, who has to respond to an Election Commission notice by tomorrow, is continuing his campaign trail and is scheduled to address election rallies in Kheda and Godhra today.
