Cong fields Rajiv Upadhyaya for Ballia LS bypoll

New Delhi, Dec 4 (UNI) Mr Rajiv Upadhyaya will be the Congress candidate against Samajawadi Party nominee and former Prime Minister Chandra Shekhar's son Neeraj Shekhar in the December 29 byelection to the Ballia Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh.

The announcement of Mr Upadhyaya's name was made by the All India Congress Committee in a press release here today.

The byelection was necessitated due to the death of Chandra Shekhar after a prolonged illness on July 8 this year.

The bypoll for the Ballia constituency was earlier scheduled for August 29, but was postponed due to the flood situation in eastern Uttar Pradesh.

Mr Vinay Shankar Tiwari, son of a former Uttar Pradesh Minister, is the BSP candidate for the bypoll.

Notification for the the bypoll was issued today. The last date for filing nominations is December 11, while the scrutiny will be held the next day.

The last day for withdrawal of nominations is December 14.

Counting of votes would take place on January 2.
