India's installed N-power capacity to almost double in 5 yrs

New Delhi, Nov 28 (UNI) The country's installed nuclear power capacity will increase from the present 4,120 MWe to 7,280 MWe by 2011 with the completion of the projects under construction, the Lok Sabha was informed today.

''Work is also at hand to take up construction of additional nuclear power plants,'' Minister of State in the PMO Prithviraj Chavan said in a written reply.

He said the nuclear power generation was about three per cent of the total electricity generation in the country.

In developed countries, the nuclear share was high with France accounting for 78 per cent, Germany 32 per cent, Japan 30 per cent, Korea 39 per cent, the UK 18 per cent and the US 19 per cent, while in developing countries such as Brazil (3 per cent) and China (2 per cent) it was comparable to that of India, he said.
