Centre yet to respond on Mullaperiyar issue: Kerala CM

Thiruvananthapuram, Nov 28 (UNI) Kerala Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan today said the Centre had not yet responded to the State's request for its intervention in finding a solution to the contentious Mullaperiyar issue.

''The Government has so far not received any commonition from the Centre to the State's request for an intervention in resolving the issue,'' he told while replying to question during Cabinet briefing here.

The State had recently sought Centre's intervention on the matter following an expert committee report pointing out ''safety concerns'' about the century-old Mullaperiyar Dam in Idukki district.

Though the Cabinet had recently decided to go ahead with the construction of a new dam across Mullaperiyar as an alternative to the present one, considering the safety of people living downstream, Tamil Nadu had objected the proposal.
