Assam: Left demands action against culprits
New
Delhi,
Nov
27:
The
CPI(M)
today
demanded
strong
action
by
the
Assam
government
against
those
responsible
for
yesterday's
incident
in
Guwahati,
in
which
a
tribal
girl
was
stripped
by
a
mob,
and
asked
the
Centre
to
implement
the
Act
for
rehabilitation
of
evicted
tribals.
The matter was raised during Zero Hour in the Rajya Sabha by Ms Brinda Karat who strongly condemned the atrocities against tribals, particularly the 'barbaric act' in which an adivasi girl was stripped by a mob. She said nearly 250 adivasis were injured in the violence.
She said that even though a large number of adivasis had been evicted from their lands, the Centre had not implemented the Act for their rehabilitation.
She demanded immediate implementation of the Act, saying new habitat should be identified and they be settled there.
BJP member Najma Heptullah intervened to say that a Committee had been formed and notices had been sent to the Ministry.
