Congress expresses concern over group clashes in Assam

New Delhi, Nov 27 (UNI) The Congress Party today termed as "unfortunate" the group clashes between adivasi protesters and locals in Guwahati on Saturday, leading to the death of one person and causing grievous injury to many.

It also condemned the stripping of an adivasi woman in the state.

Party Spokesman Abishek Manu Singhvi welcomed the compensation of Rs three lakhs announced by the state government to the family of the dead and Rs 50,000 each to the injured.

Dr Singhvi said the miscreants responsible for the stripping incident had since been arrested and the Chief Minister issued firm directions that no laxity on the part of the authorities would be tolerated.

He thanked the Congress-led Assam government for taking all steps to bring the situation under control.
