Mob assaults cops for attemptng to stop bullfight

Panaji, Nov 25 (UNI) A mob assaulted a police inspector and five constables who tried to disperse a crowd engaged in witnessing the banned ''bullfight'' under Colva police station limits of South Goa today.

The police have registered a case against unknown assailants and no arrest had been made so far.

It might be recalled that the bullfight popularly known as 'dherio' was declared illegal as it amounts to cruelty to animals.

Yet, the game had been organised clandestinely as it provides entertainment to the rich and attracts heavy betting, as the organisers ''manage'' the authorities concerned to turn a Nelson's eye.

The recently-elected Member of Parliament from Mormugao Constituency Francisco Sardinha (Congress), before the election, had said his top priority was to introduce a private members bill in Lok Sabha to declare the 'dheorios' as legal.
