Labourer unearths 12th century silver coins

Gulbarga, Nov 25 (UNI) A clay pot containing antique silver coins belonging to 12th century belonging to the times of Bhamani kings has been found by a labourer in Brahmapura area in the city.

The poor labourer Hanumanthappa, who was digging the neighbouring site to remove from soil discovered the pot filled with 640 silver coins on November 21. He promptly handed over the pot to the police the next day.

Speaking to news persons ASP M V Nagaraju said coins weighed more than seven kgs. It belonged to Bhamani kings who ruled the area during the 12th century. Urdu and Arabic inscriptions were found on the both faces of the coins.

The officials had alerted the ASI authorities on the find and archaeological department officials were likely to take up an excavation work in the area.
