Speaking after releasing a book titled ''Itihasa Sampada'', a collection of articles relating to historical importance of Shimoga District, Prof Sundara said the present student community was forgetting its own culture.
Though we had Constitutional freedom in the country, there was no 'intellectual freedom' for the younger generation, he opined.
The youngsters were attracted more towards western culture.
Countries like the US, Japan and Russia were ''spending huge amounts'' for spreading their culture in India thereby ''spoiling'' Indian culture, he alleged.
Absence of syllabus on ancient culture, science and heritage in schools and colleges was another reason for the youngsters being ''lured'' to Western culture, he lamented.
The government should come forward to fund the excavation of thousands of ancient historical sites, he said.
