Puducherry, Nov 25 (UNI) The Puducherry unit of the DMK today urged the Centre to confer 'special category state status' on Puducherry to ensure its development.

A resolution to this effect was adopted at the party office bearers' meeting here.

Another resolution urged the Territorial administration to abolish the system of entrance examination for admission to professional courses from next academic year.

Resolutions urging the administration to check the ''diversion'' of special component plan funds meant for the development of Dalits and fix sugar cane price at Rs 1,500 per tonne, considering the hike in fertiliser price and harvesting charges, were also adopted.

The meeting also urged to set up a separate 'Fishermen Welfare Board' and decided to accord a reception to DMK Deputy General Secretary and Tamil Nadu Local Administration Minister M K Stalin, who would visit Puducherry on December 6.
