Guwahati, Nov 25: As many as 150 junior doctors, of the Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) here, were today terminated from their services and later arrested for refusing to withdraw their ongoing strike.

The junior doctors had been on a strike since November 23 following an altercation with the family members of a patient, who was brought to the hospital that night.

The patient died later and the family members alleged that the junior doctors on duty had misbehaved with them and also filed an FIR, blaming them for the death.

The junior doctors had gone on strike immediately after the incident, demanding security for on-duty doctors.

Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma had urged the junior doctors to withdraw their strike twice since yesterday, including this morning.

Yesterday's riots in the city had left about 250 injured and the GMCH was hard pressed to attend to the patients, particularly as the junior doctors were also on strike.

However, as the junior doctors refused to call off the strike, services of 150 junior doctors were terminated today.

They were also arrested, official sources said.

The minister was reported to have said that about 100 doctors would be immediately deputed in the GMCH from other locations following the development.
