India's progress enriched by Sikh community: Sonia

New Delhi, Nov 23 (UNI) Greeting the people on the occasion of 'Guruparb', Congress President Sonia Gandhi today recalled the contribution of Guru Nanak in enlightening the Indian society and the role of the Sikh community in the country's progress.

''Indian culture and society has been greatly enriched and enlightened by the deeply spiritual tenets of the Sikh faith that Guru Nanak established, just as our country's progress and development, in various fields, has been greatly enriched by the Sikh community,'' Ms Gandhi said in a message.

She said Guru Nanak's wise words and noble teachings had universal appeal and eternal relevance. His life and teachings conveyed the very essence of compassion and courage, love and tolerence, humanity and brotherhood.

''I send my warm felicitations to all members of the Sikh community, and all those who revere Guru Nanak, on the sacred occasion,'' she said and expressed the hope that the words of the first Sikh Guru would ''continue to guide and inspire us foreover''.
