HC directive on import of captive elephants

Kochi, Nov 23 (UNI) A Division Bench of the Kerala High Court today directed the Chief Wildlife Warden not to issue certificates of ownership to person importing captive elephants from outside the state until further orders.

The Bench comprising Chief Justice H L Dattu and Justice K M Joseph passed this direction while hearing a petition filed by Elephant Lovers Association, Thrissur.

According to the petitioners, as per the Wildlife Protection Act, it was not permissible to import wild animals from one state to another and sought its strict compliance.

The court also issued notices to Central and State Governments who are the respondents.
