Provide citizenship to Taslima Nasreen: CPI
New Delhi, Nov 23: Mr Gurudas Dasgupta (CPI) today asked the Centre to grant citizenship to controversial Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen and provide security to her.
Raising the issue during zero hour in the Lok Sabha, Mr Dasgupta said it was unfortunate that Ms Nasreen had to leave Kolkata due to violent demands.
It would be consistent with the Indian tradition to let her live in the country, he said, citing the example of the Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama, who had been given asylum despite protests.
Mr Dasgupta tendered his apology for the situation in West Bengal that forced the author to move out to Jaipur.
Mr Ilyas Azmi (BSP) staged a walk-out as he was not allowed by the Chair to express his views. Mr Mohan Singh, who was in the Chair, said he could associate himself with Mr Dasgupta.
