Mah Council adjourned over farmers' suicides

Nagpur, Nov 22 (UNI) The Maharashtra Legislative Council was today adjourned over the demand from Opposition members to hold a discussion on the issue of farmer's suicides in the state.

Immediately after the House convened this morning for a special sitting, Nitin Gadkari (BJP) raised a point of order expressing surprise that a discussion on the issue had been given a lower agenda for the day.

Mr Gadkari said the issue had been listed only for a short discussion at serial number 10. This was a violation of the Chairman's ruling on Tuesday, he contended.

Madhukar Sarpotdar (Shiv Sena) described it as misleading of the House. The opposition members had given a notice under Rule 289 for an immediate discussion on farmer's suicides on Tuesday.

In his ruling, Chairman Shivajirao Deshmukh had admitted the notice and slated it for discussion on yesterday.

However, the Council was adjourned yesterday for the whole day to condole the death of former legislator and minister Pramod Navalkar.
