HC reserves order on appeal filed by 28 convicts

Chennai, Nov 22 (UNI) The Madras High Court today reserved orders on an appeal filed by 28 convicts seeking acquittal in the Dharmapuri bus burning case.

A Division Bench, comprising Justices D Murugesan and Mr Justice V Periya Karruppayya, reserved orders on an appeal filed by the convicts against the judgement of Salem Special Court, which awarded capital punishment to three and seven years rigorous imprisonment to the remaining 25.

Three girl students of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) were charred to death when the TNAU-owned bus was set ablaze by AIADMK activists at Dharmapuri in 2000.

The father of one of the deceased girls had petitioned the High Court, seeking maximum punishment to all the convicts, who were awarded seven years rigorous imprisonment by the Salem Special Court.
