Farmers demand procurement price for sugarcane

Puducherry, Nov 22 (UNI) The Puducherry Agriculturists Association, affiliated to the CPI, today urged the Puducherry Administration to announce a procurement price of Rs 1,500 per tonne of sugarcane.

A resolution adopted at a general body meeting of the association here yesterday maintained that an enhancement of the price by Rs 66 for the crushing season would not be sufficent, considering the hike in labour charges and transportation expenses among other things.

Another resolution urged the agriculture ministers of the southern states to join together and press the Centre to announce Rs 1,000 as the Minimum Support Price(MSP) for paddy.

The association also urged the Administration to simplify membership procedures to the Welfare Board of the agricultural labourers.
