Fifteen people have been arrested in connection with the rioting, police said.
The situation was now under control, DCP Satish Khandare told newspersons today.
Violence sparked off after the anti-encroachment squad of the PMC razed the illegal compound wall of the place of worship, located in the Gultekdi area, as per the directives of the Bombay High Court.
Police were forced to resort to a mild lathi charge at 0500 hrs this morning to control the mob, Mr Khandare said. The protests had spread to other parts of the city and cases have been registered at four different police stations, he added.
Meanwhile, Mr Khandare informed that heavy police ''bandobast'' has been maintained in Swargate, Khadak, Gorpadi Peth, Sahkarnagar, Kondhwa and Bibvewadi areas of the city.
