Phone facility for inmates in Puducherry Central prison

Puducherry, Nov 21 (UNI) Puducherry Deputy Inspector General of Police Vasudeva Rao today inaugurated the telephone facility for prisoners inside the campus of central prison here.

The one-rupee coin instrument was installed by Vodaphone.

Later talking to newspersons, Mr Rao said the inmates could contact their relatives using the phone for which the jail authorities would provide the one rupee coin.

However, the telephone number to which they need to talk should be given in advance and they could speak under the supervision of an officer, he said, adding that such a facility was available in Karnataka and Kerala prisons.

Mr Rao said the central prison would be shifted to the new premises at Kalapet near here in a couple of days and Director General of Police, Puducherry, Mr Khan, who will be assuming office shortly, would inaugurate it.

Steps were being taken to fill up the 43 vacant posts at the central prison, he added.
