SC dismisses petition for compulsory singing of national anthem

New Delhi, Nov 20 (UNI) The Supreme Court has dismissed a petition seeking directions to the government to make it mandatory to sing National Anthem in all government offices.

A bench comprising Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan and Justices R V Raveendran and J M Panchal yesterday told petitioner Sushil Kumar Jain, an advocate, that such directions could not be issued by this court.

The petitioner had challenged the Delhi High Court judgement dismissing his petition holding that National Anthem was not a ''mantra'' for removing corruption in public life.

The petitioner appearing in person had earlier contended that singing of National Anthem in the morning as well in the evening shall purify the hearts and minds of public servents and will go a long way in removing corruption in public life.
