Talking to newspersons on board the special aircraft on way to Singapore for the India-ASEAN summit and East Asia meet, Dr Singh said, " I sincerely hope that the state government will be able to take the necessary steps to restore confidence in the people through deployment of security forces." He said he had asked Home Minister Shivraj Patil to monitor the situation and remain in touch with West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee.
"It is the duty of the state government that all sections of people are entitled to receive protection from the law enforcement authorities. I understand the spontaneous outpouring of grief and anguish over the issue expressed by artists and intellectuals in Kolkata and hope that the state government will take note of it," he added.
