Corrupt accountant's property attached in Kashmir

Srinagar, Nov 20 (UNI) The Jammu and Kashmir Vigilance Organisation has attached the property of an accountant against whom a case of possession of disproportionate assets was under investigation.

A vigilance spokesman said the organisation attached a three- storied building of Abdul Ahad Rather, an accountant in the finance department, at Pulwama.

The accused had constructed the commercial building at a cost of about Rs 17 lakh after purchasing one kanal of land at Dangarpora in Pulwama district for Rs 6.09 lakh in 2005.

A case was registered against Rather on October 3 last year following a verification which prima facie established that he had acquired disproportionate assets by indulging in corrupt practices and misusing his official position.

During investigations, it was established that Rather had acquired about 60 kanals (3 hectares) of land, a house, a shopping line at Drusu village besides a commercial complex at Pulwama, amounting to Rs 36.71 lakh.

The spokesman said the accused was the sole earning hand in his family and his salary being the main source of income.

The attachment order was issued after accord of approval from the authorities concerned. The investigations into the case were at an advanced stage, he added.
