Three BSF jawans suspended for firing at mob

Agartala, Nov 19 (UNI) Three jawans of the 24 battalion BSF were suspended following the death of a villager owing to firing by the BSF personnel on November 17.

Official sources said here today that the BSF authorities had shifted the 24 battalion from Tillabazar in North Tripura to the northernmost fringes of the state, while assuring to carry out inquiry into the incident.

Meanwhile, the district administration announced a compensation of Rs 30,000 to the victim's family and provide a government job to one of the family members as well as Rs 10,000 compensation to the injured persons.

The incident occurred when an irate mob resisted the BSF personnel, who were deporting five Bangladeshi nationals, following a court order, on November 17.

The villagers claimed that the persons, who were being deported, were Indian citizens and alleged that the administration had misguided the court.

The villagers also observed a 24-hour general strike in protest against the incident.

Meanwhile, the District Magistrate held a peace meeting with the villagers yesterday to restore normalcy in the area.
