SC dismisses Punjab govt plea challenging Raninder's bail

New Delhi, Nov 19 (UNI) The Supreme Court today dismissed a petition filed by the Punjab government seeking cancellation of bail granted to Raninder Singh, son of former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh, an accused in the Ludhiana City Centre Scandal case.

A bench comprising Justices A K Mathur and Markandey Katju told the state government to approach the Punjab and Haryana High Court for cancellation of the bail, in case he was not cooperating in the investigation which was being carried out by Vigilance Bureau of the state government.

Counsel for the state government had earlier pleaded that the custodial interrogation of the accused was must to ascertain the truth and to find out the role played by the accused in the scandal.

Capt Amarinder Singh, his family members and several top bureaucrats of his government are facing allegations of amassing assets over Rs 100 crore through corrupt means during his tenure as Chief Minister of the state.

According to the Punjab government, headed by Parkash Singh Badal, a loss to the tune of Rs 1500-3000 crore was caused to the state exchequer in the allotement of the contract for construction of the centre.
